    question about gaming

How is the connection speed/reliability?  I would appreciate it if some gamers could tell me if it's overly laggy.

    Thanks!

So this thread has received near 5k views, so I figure it deserves a response, lol. Maybe others could benefit from this- or, have some more input?

Gaming on the SU's residential network appears to be impossible- unless you enjoy a "lag fest."

I've received a stable, reliable connection in a game for an entire day once or twice this school year. I'd say a good 80% of the time gaming is forced to take place on an unreliable and unstable connection- even web browsing can hit huge lag spikes during "peak hours" (this is particularly annoying if you are streaming video directly).

To add to the situation, OIT does not support gaming. So, you are on your own with problems that you experience if it doesn't impact your academic life (ex. online research).

Example of Poor Gaming Reliability: If I try to play World of Warcraft (a game that doesn't require an extremely stable connection in the first place) it can be sit at around 90-190ms for a bit of time (for those of you unfamiliar, 0-250 ms is a good speed). This could last 10 minutes or a few hours. If I'm not experiencing the oh-so-rare condition of good latency, spikes will bring it up to 300-900ms repeatedly or it will hold in that range (250+ can be bothersome, anything over 350 can make the game not very fun). Sometimes I hit around 1200ms or higher. This is especially bothersome when playing with friends and others since having such slow respond time can make or break a goal.

If you're desperate, you could try playing at around 2:00-10:00 AM. Though, I'm sure your rest for studies would be more important than gaming. Alternatively if you are even more desperate, you could spend a bit of money on a wireless broadband connection from various companies, though I'm unsure of that performance (I think that'd go for about $30 a month).

    I apologize for any typos.
