I hear a lot about Ron Paul being a bit of a fascination of some of the more liberally minded, but when you get down to it he seems to be more of a throwback to the old skool Republicans that I remember growing up.
The new conservatism that came in with Bush and Cheney favors big, unrestrained government (especially when it comes to civil liberties and security). It always seemed odd to me because when I thought of Republicans, I thought of the fiscally conservative types who didn't like the Federal government.
It seems that some of the favorable reaction Ron Paul gets from some Liberals is due to his rejection of the Bush 43 status quo, yet when you get down to his roots, he would like to see the UN, Department of Education, etc. go away.
So with Ron Paul getting so much attention, are we seeing a resurgence of Classic Republicans pre-evangelical take over, or is it simply that both Liberals and Conservatives are so hungry for a new direction that they'll laud anything and anyone who speaks candidly about the shortcomings of the Bush Doctrine?
Just another alumnus...
