Rats in residence halls? Floors like landfills?

Universityworld A SPECTATOR BLOG FOR NATIONAL COLLEGE NEWS

I’ve heard Seattle U students say their homes at residence halls on campus are bad far too many times. But friends from other universities who have visited me walked into Campion and called it “classy” and a “luxury dorm.”

And while certain things could be better (the Internet connection, toilets overflowing in Chardin), I’d say we Seattle U on-campus residents are lucky.

In comparison to students at Emory University, we’re downright spoiled in fact. Residents in Trimble Hall at Emory report hearing rats scamper through the walls. Students’ possessions have been chewed through, and one student was bitten trying to battle the ferocious beasts.

It gets better.

The fourth floor of Easton Hall at the University of Maryland was getting so messy and residents were so disrespectful to custodial staff that the residence hall director and resident assistants asked custodial to stop cleaning the floor. Two weeks later, the floor is comparable to a “waste disposal,” according to one resident. Another student said he couldn’t go into the bathroom without dry heaving.

I feel fortunate. Students manage to clean up decently after themselves (most of the time), and our awesome and friendly custodial and facilities staff keep things clean and working.

In fact, Housing Director Romando Nash told resident assistants awhile ago that, like every other year, the attitude of the facilities/custodial staff is always the highest rated item on the EBI satisfaction survey residents take.
