Is a college education worth it?

While grabbing my cup of coffee from the business school, a headline from the NY Times business section caught my eye: "A Diploma's Worth? Ask Her." (registration required).

The collumnist, David Leonhardt, examines the economic advantages of a college diploma by comparing the average increases in salaries for men with vs. increases in salaries for women . Since women have been earning their college diplomas at a much higher clip than men the past few years, the results are not surprising.

Armed with college degrees, large numbers of women have entered fields once dominated by men. Nearly half of new doctors today are women, up from just 1 of every 10 in the early 1970s. In all, the average inflation-adjusted weekly pay of women has jumped 26 percent since 1980.

And men? Their pay has increased about as much as their college graduation rate — it’s up just 1 percent since 1980.

Leonhardt also accounts for gender discrimination in salaries and such, as well. It's a great read, especially in light of the Feminist Week events going on at campus.

# re: No, but really, is a college education worth it for women? @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 5:58 PM

I don't understand your question, "is a college education worth it for women?" I instantly found it sexist. I think a college education is worth it for anyone who values a higher education. And given how sexist our country is, a college education is obviously worth it to women. It gives them more agency as far as jobs go and it places them, at least at the foundation, on equal footing with men. Right? Is money the only thing of value in this discussion?

Even though men's salaries have jumped only 1%, women still make less than men. It's not like the world is turning upside down. It's just slowly catching up with this crazy idea called gender equality.

Hi Emma,

I'm glad you're so passionate about the issue. I think you'll find that if you read the article, Leonhardt is firmly on the side that college diplomas firmly increase the salaries of both men and women.

Certainly, perhaps "worth" was an ambiguous word that I stuck in my title, but it ties into my next post. From a purely economic sense, it does, not to mention the host of other fantastic reasons mentioned in the full article.

Dear Jason,

I agree with Emma about the title of your article. I don't think your goal in this article was to come off as offensive, and as such, you should edit it.

I've heard from you, Jenny and Emma, that my title is "instantly sexist"; and that college education is "obviously" worth it to women. I agree that the title is provocative; it's meant to be. If you read my most recent post, there's a very good argument that college education isn't "obviously" worth it for many people, men and women included.

Still, it's seems you're both hung up on the title, and in the interest of everyone actually reading the article, I'll change it.

Jason
