What's up at Lemieux Library

What if the library building closed temporarily?

We want your opinion about what to do if the Lemieux Library building is closed for renovation and expansion, which will probably begin as soon as June 2009.

The construction will last about 14 months and will impact the services and collections provided by the library as well as the building itself. We are considering a scenario in which we would close and move out of the current library building during the construction.  Therefore, we're identifying our essential services and planning how to provide them elsewhere (on or near campus), with a goal of minimizing disruptions during this transition time.

To help us, please tell us: What are the most important services that the library provides? To you, what is "essential" about the library?

Essential services of the Lemieux Library:

1) Quiet study space both on bottom floor and on upper floors of the library - can study spaces as vast be relocated to another place on campus?

2) Access to Summit

Will the book from the library still be accessible when the library is being renovated?

Thank you for sharing your opinions!  Please, everyone, keep them coming.
We are interested in your comments and are taking them seriously.

To answer a question:  Yes, we plan to have some of the books available during the construction. We are working now to identify the most heavily used parts of the collection. We will have access to Summit books as well.

A follow-up question for the community: What parts of our collection do you prefer to have available during the transition, and why?

A, you said, "the point here is that the library would be closed for up to 14 months...that's an entire school year!" If that were correct, the most vocal objectors in this thread would not be nearly upset enough, but you've missed the point. Devin, however, has gotten it exactly! We aren't closing, we are relocating, temporarily, so that we can address exactly the problems (computer lab crowding, lack of 24-hour study/lab space, not enough quiet study locations, etc.) that are being brought up in this conversation.

What Kristen is asking, and what many students have answered (thank you!) is: when our building closes for renovation, what are the most important things we need to offer in our temporary location? From your comment, I think you would answer "quiet study space, and the computers." Many people appear to agree with you. Other students have also mentioned access to our books, and those from the Summit consortium, group meeting rooms, and for some reason the printer (we only have one, out of about eight accessible to students on campus). We are taking all these requests very seriously as we plan our temporary space.

Thank you, and everyone else, for your comments, but please have no fear, SU will not go without a library for 14 months.

Thanks again, everyone, for the comments.  LG, you raise some important issues, but I do want to emphasize again that while the current library building will close for renovation, library services will continue in another campus location.

We are actively trying to figure out how to renovate without diminishing services.  In fact, that's what this post was about - we wanted to hear more from our community about which services are essential, so that we can disrupt those essential services as little as possible during the building's closure.  Just because the building will be closed doesn't mean the library's services and materials will be unavailable!  You may have different access to our services and materials, but we will still provide them. As plans are formed, information will be shared with all of the campus offices about the interim location of the library for the 2010 academic year.
